A reimagined hub for interdisciplinary science.

When the University of Delaware unveiled Building X, its new 132,500-square-foot research facility, it was more than just a replacement for the former McKinly Hall—it was a reimagined hub for interdisciplinary science. Housing Physics, Biology, and Psychology labs, as well as teaching spaces serving over 1,000 students each year, the facility was designed to inspire collaboration and innovation. To support this mission, every detail of the space was thoughtfully considered, from the advanced rooftop solar array to the shared core facilities and flexible lab layouts.
A critical, though often overlooked, part of the building’s success lies in the selection of high-quality, lab-grade seating. With four teaching labs hosting large numbers of undergraduates and research labs supporting 48 scientists, comfort, durability, and ergonomics play an essential role in day-to-day operations. Students spend long hours in teaching labs, and post-docs and faculty conduct detailed experiments that require steady focus—tasks that demand supportive seating to minimize fatigue and distraction. Chairs built for lab environments also meet the practical needs of higher-education settings: cleanability, adjustability for diverse users, and resilience to high-traffic use.
The right lab seating doesn’t just furnish a space—it enables students and researchers to do their best work, creating an environment where innovation can truly thrive.
