Health and Human Services Center

Morgan State University’s newly opened 208,000-square-foot Health and Human Services Center (HHSC) exemplifies the integration of sustainability, interdisciplinary research, and community-centered design in a state-of-the-art academic facility. Designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, the six-story building consolidates multiple health-focused programs—spanning nursing, social work, nutrition, and public health—within a collaborative environment that supports both academic excellence and local impact.
Built on the site of a former National Guard armory, the HHSC reflects Morgan State’s commitment to addressing health disparities in underserved communities through evidence-based research and workforce development. The facility houses high-performance laboratories, a technology visualization lab, and research centers focused on urban health equity. The design promotes transparency and interconnectivity with open layouts, glass partitions, and communal spaces that encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Sustainability is embedded throughout—from energy-efficient systems and climate-responsive façades to reclaimed wood finishes and a rooftop greenhouse used for urban agriculture research. Natural light floods the atrium and academic spaces, enhancing occupant well-being while reducing energy use. The facility also prioritizes inclusivity, accessibility, and wellness through intentional design choices like quiet rooms, collaborative lounges, and fitness-supportive architecture.
By blending sustainable strategies with health-focused research and education, Morgan State’s HHSC serves as a model for how modern laboratory buildings can promote environmental responsibility, social equity, and academic innovation.
