Yuma Medical Center – Clinical Lab Expansion

Modern infrastructure meets an interdisciplinary science hub

Installation Details

Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) recently unveiled its expanded 20,000 SF state-of-the-art clinical laboratory, a four-year design and build effort that reflects the growing healthcare needs of the Yuma community. The new facility not only doubled the hospital’s laboratory footprint but also introduced advanced automation and robotic systems, allowing for twice the testing capacity with improved speed and accuracy. “This laboratory, I would put up against any laboratory in the nation,” noted Trudie Milner, COO at YRMC. Designed with redundancy, safety, and adaptability at the forefront, the build-out included a BSL-3 lab, microbiology suites, and blood processing labs, all engineered to meet stringent code and compliance standards without interrupting hospital operations. This achievement underscores the critical role architecture and engineering play in delivering functional, efficient, and safe spaces that support high-stakes healthcare outcomes.

Equally important to the project’s success was an emphasis on user experience and the integration of lab-grade furniture and seating solutions. As the demands of modern labs grow increasingly complex, ergonomic and durable seating ensures that clinicians and technicians can perform long hours of detailed work without compromising health, safety, or efficiency. Dr. Brent Bedke, the lab’s medical director, emphasized how thoughtful design touches—even in staff rest areas—contribute to overall performance and morale, stating, “My favorite part about the new lab is probably the breakroom… It’s a great space for our laboratory employees to rest and take a break.” By pairing advanced infrastructure with human-centered design elements, the YRMC lab expansion sets a benchmark for how architecture, engineering, and product specification—down to lab-grade seating—can elevate both scientific capability and workplace well-being.

Cramer placed 75 Fusion r+ chairs in various labs in the laboratory space. Fusion chairs are remarkably durable, reliable and comfortable – making them a favorite for all-day sitters. The proprietary r+ covering is resistant to tears and punctures and the 3.5″ molded foam cushion provides consistent support throughout the day.
